Capacity Building and Professional Development of Imams in the Maldives

Led comprehensive capacity-building and professional development initiatives for Maldivian Imams, aimed at strengthening theological knowledge, religious leadership, and professional competency within mosques across the Republic of Maldives. These initiatives addressed the capacity gaps in mosque leadership while ensuring that Imams possess the scholarly and practical skills required to guide Muslim communities effectively.

  • Facilitated structured international training and scholarly exchange programmes in collaboration with reputable Islamic institutions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, and Malaysia, enabling Maldivian Imams to benefit from advanced learning environments and exposure to diverse scholarly traditions within the Muslim world. Through these international programmes, 93 Maldivian Imams received specialized training by 2026, strengthening their expertise in Islamic jurisprudence, Qur’anic sciences, Hadith studies, mosque administration, and religious outreach.
  • Implemented a nationwide Imam Refresher Programme, designed to enhance the continuous professional development of mosque leaders across the country. The programme successfully trained over 1,029 Imams throughout the Maldives, covering key areas including Tafsir, Fiqh, Hadith, Aqidah, Tajweed, mosque leadership, management, communication skills, and personal development.
  • Coordinated a specialized Arabic language training programme for 33 Imams in collaboration with the Al-Azhar Mission in the Maldives, aimed at strengthening linguistic competency and enabling Imams to engage directly with Arabic sources of Islamic scholarship.
